Verdict: False
Claims that Ugandan security operatives were involved in the Tanzanian election held on October 29th were viral on social media both before and after the country went to the polls, which later escalated to violence leading to thousands of deaths.
Among the widely shared content by both Ugandans and the neighbors is a photo of trucks full of Ugandan soldiers said to have assisted the country with quelling the protestors. One of these posts has so far gathered more than 2600 interactions, however the images are not in any way related to the 2025 election in Tanzania that has given President Samia Suluhu Hassan her first full term.
Our investigation has found this image, taken by journalist Isaac Kasamani and published by the AFP to be old. It was taken on at the Uganda – South Sudan border in Nimule on 14 July 2016.
The image has previously been viral, used to illustrate unrelated incidents and events. This confirms allegations that the trucks were headed for Tanzania to be false.
