Verdict: Fake
A video of President Yoweri Museveni warning opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Bobiwine to not waste his time with elections because no one can defeat him emerged on TikTok.
In the post, liked by over six thousand TikTok users and shared by hundreds others, Museveni appears to say, “ I really wonder sometimes when I see Bobiwine campaigning, he knows very well that he cannot defeat me but he keeps running up and down every time …”.
Days after this post, the same video of Museveni in the same posture and attire was shared on X (formerly twitter) showing Museveni warning CNN journalist Larry Madowo not to come to Uganda come 2026 when the country goes to the polls.
Madowo, a Kenyan journalist recently made a documentary exposing the human rights violations and brutality by the Tanzanian government as they quelled protestors in Post – Election protests estimated to have led to over 3000 deaths.
While Museveni is seen to be commenting about recent events in the video, the clip is old and the president who is currently traversing the country seeking re-election for the seventh term, did not make those statements.
In the original video, published on a Youtube Channel UG Files on 6 November 2023, Museveni is talking about issues affecting the African continent and its relationship with the west.
Ugandawired traced this video and found that clips of it have been posted by other people previously on social media, including state minister for gender, labour, and social development in charge of children and youth affairs Balam Barugahara.
Using an Artificial Intelligence Detector Hive Moderation, we confirmed that the video was altered using Artificial Intelligence to make Museveni appear to be making statements about Bobiwine and Madowo.
