The Speaker of Parliament has released the official funeral programme for Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who died on Sunday evening following unsuccessful surgery.
Nakimuli, a member of the National Unity Platform, died at Alexandria Medical Center in Kampala where she had gone for surgery on Sunday
Religious, cultural and political leaders have mourned her passing.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, Democratic Party President Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, and NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, among others, have all eulogized the MP.
“Terrible, shocking news! Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, Woman MP, Kalangala District, just passed on after an unsuccessful surgery! May God strengthen all of us in this very tough time,” Kyagulanyi posted on his X account on Sunday
Mpuuga who closely worked with MP Nakimuli while he was still serving as Leader of Opposition said the news of Hon. Nakimuli’s passing was “not only shocking but devastating.”
He described Nakimuli as young, energetic and hardworking, with zeal and determination to better the lives of the people of the Ssese Islands.
“She served in my cabinet as the Shadow Minister for Fisheries and was very outspoken on issues concerning fishing communities and safety on the lakes. She was peaceful and never acrimonious or vengeful. We thank the Almighty Lord for her life and the many talents she shared with us as a leader and a sportswoman,” Mpuuga said.
Katikkiro Mayiga said MP Nakimuli was active in both Buganda Kingdom and parliamentary activities. He extended condolences to Christopher Walusimbi, Nakimuli’s father and former Buganda County Chief for Ssese.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among hailed the deceased as a dedicated politician and ardent advocate for the people of Kalangala.
“Words are insufficient to convey the shock we are experiencing at this moment, and we pray that the Lord Almighty sustains her family, friends, and all of us during this challenging time.” Speaker Among said
Funeral Programme
According to the programme released on Monday by Speaker Among, Nakimuli’s body will be transported to Kalangala on Monday. On Tuesday, there will be a special session of the Kalangala District Council and public viewing.
On Wednesday, the body will be taken to Parliament for public viewing and a special session to honour Nakimuli’s work. Later that day, the remains will be taken to the National Unity Platform offices in Kavule, followed by an official vigil at the family’s home in Namungoona, Kampala.
On Thursday, a funeral service will be held at Namungoona Orthodox Church, followed by burial at her ancestral home in Luweero District.
Kalangala District Chairperson Rajab Ssemakula said Nakimuli had been the voice of her electorate, advocating for a second ferry in Bukasa and several other development projects.
Born on July 2, 1985, Nakimuli was a devoted Orthodox Christian,politician and volleyball player. She was the daughter of the late Mary Nalwanga and Christopher Walusimbi, the former Ssese chief (Kweeba).
After graduating from Makerere University, she served as a community development officer in various sub-counties of Kalangala before contesting for Parliament in 2021.
She defeated incumbent MP Idah Nabayiga of National Resistance Movement. In January this year, Nakimuli and Nabayiga again faced off, and she was re-elected to the same seat.
