Atleast three people have been hospitalised following a head-on collision involving two vehicles along the Kampala–Mityana–Mubende Highway.
The accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 4:15 a.m. at Ttamu Trading Centre in Mityana Municipality. It involved a silver Subaru, registration number UBQ 902K, which was travelling from Mubende towards Kampala, and a black Toyota Noah, registration number UA 301BB.
The injured victims have been identified as Kiiza Ssebagala, 33, a gold miner and resident of Bozza in Mpigi District; Yasin Haliba, 35, a driver and resident of Bugolobi, Kampala; and Liao Baiguan, 44, a Chinese national and engineer with Yonkin Construction Company, whose head office is located in Bugolobi, Kampala.
According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the accident occurred when the driver of the Subaru attempted to overtake another vehicle travelling in the same direction.
Kigozi said the driver subsequently lost control and collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota Noah, injuring occupants of both vehicles. Both drivers reportedly sustained serious injuries.
Traffic police officers from Mityana Central Police Station visited the scene and rescued the victims, who were trapped in the wreckage of the two vehicles. They were rushed to Mityana General Hospital for medical attention.
The wreckage of both vehicles was later towed to the Mityana Traffic Police Yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Police have attributed the suspected cause of the accident to reckless driving by the driver of the Subaru, registration number UBQ 902K.
