Mityana- At least 12 people have been injured in a road accident at Ttamu Trading Centre in Mityana Municipality along the Kampala–Mubende Road.
The accident occurred on Saturday at around 9:45 p.m. and involved two vehicles: a white Toyota Hilux double-cabin pickup, registration number UG 709M, and a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UBG 627F.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, the driver of the Toyota Hilux was travelling from Kampala towards Mityana and Mubende when he reached Ttamu Trading Centre.
Kigozi said the driver was reportedly disoriented by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle, lost control of the pickup and crossed into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with the taxi.
The crash injured both drivers and 10 passengers who were travelling in the taxi.
Police traffic officers from Mityana visited the scene and, with the help of other responders, removed the victims from the wreckage before they were rushed to Mityana General Hospital and nearby health facilities for treatment.
“Both drivers were among the victims who sustained serious injuries. They have been identified as Godfrey Kateba, aged 48, and Richard Ssekande, aged 34, a resident of Kyegegwa District and the driver of the taxi, which had 10 other passengers,” Kigozi said.
The wreckage of both vehicles was towed to the Mityana Traffic Police Yard as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
