Verdict: False Claim / Fake News
Social media users, led by Turkey-based blogger Fred Lumbuye, have continued to claim that Uganda’s First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni, is dead.
These claims persist despite official confirmations of her recovery and her recent public appearance. The First Lady had been absent from public view for several months after falling seriously ill on 21 March 2026. This prolonged absence fuelled widespread speculation and a wave of false death reports online. President Yoweri Museveni publicly addressed the matter on 24 June 2026, her 78th birthday, stating that she had survived a serious health challenge and was recovering well (allAfrica / Nile Post report; ChimpReports).
Janet Museveni herself later confirmed her recovery in a public message, thanking Ugandans for their prayers. On 19 August 2026, Janet Museveni made a clear public appearance alongside President Museveni at State House Entebbe, where they hosted international evangelist Bishop Dr. LaDonna C. Osborn. The meeting was held ahead of the planned consecration of their daughter, Pastor Patience Rwabwogo, as an Episcopal Bishop.
Photos and video from the event were widely shared by official channels and mainstream media (Daily Monitor; The Independent; Nile Post). This marked one of her first public engagements since the health scare. Additional recent photos of her with daughter Natasha were also published earlier in August ChimpReports.
Despite this, Lumbuye and others have continued to dismiss the recent photos and videos as “old,” insisting the First Lady is still deceased. In one post presented as a “fact-check,” Lumbuye claimed the circulating image was from 2025 and depicted Museveni, his daughter, and wife meeting Irish Ambassador Margaret Gaynor during the presentation of credentials.
This assertion is incorrect. The September 2025 credentials ceremony involved Ambassador Gaynor meeting President Museveni State House Uganda, but the recently shared images from 19 August 2026 clearly show the meeting with Bishop LaDonna Osborn. Gaynor does not appear in those photos.
Earlier death claims and doctored materials (including altered Daily Monitor front pages and manipulated videos) circulating since early 2026 have been repeatedly debunked by fact-checkers (Africa Check; PesaCheck).
No credible news organisation or official government source has reported Janet Museveni’s death. The continuing circulation of these false claims does not change the facts: Janet Museveni is alive, recovering, and has resumed limited public appearances. Ugandans are urged to rely on verified official and mainstream sources rather than unsubstantiated social media assertions.
