Police in Mityana Municipality have arrested a 70-year-old retired orthopaedic doctor for allegedly carrying out illegal abortions.
The suspect, identified as Samuel Madaaba, was arrested following intelligence received by police indicating that he was allegedly involved in carrying out abortions at his home.
Police conducted an intelligence-led operation at Madaaba’s residence in Gombolola Cell, Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality and recovered several exhibits pinning him .
According to police, the home was cordoned off and documented as a scene of crime. Officers reportedly recovered several exhibits, including five fresh human foetuses found in a bucket, a blood-stained old mattress, medical instruments and other tools.
The suspect and his wife were subsequently detained to assist with investigations.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, said the police file would soon be forwarded to the State Attorney for legal guidance and possible sanctioning of charges.
The proposed charges include infanticide, conspiracy to commit abortion, and aiding and abetting abortion, among other offences.
Police have warned medical practitioners in private practice against deviating from established medical procedures, saying those found in breach of the law will be held accountable.
