Police in Kasangati Division are investigating how a 41-year-old man suspected of engaging in homosexual acts escaped from lawful custody while under police guard.
The suspect, identified as Robert Iduuli, a resident of Buwambo in Wakiso District, had been arrested on September 28, 2025, after an angry mob allegedly attacked him over claims that he was involved in same-sex relations.
According to preliminary police findings, Iduuli reportedly attempted to return to his supermarket after learning that it had been attacked by residents who had accused him of being homosexual.
Before he could reach the premises, he was confronted by the mob. Police officers intervened and rescued him from the crowd before taking him into protective custody.
Investigators say a subsequent search of Iduuli’s residence allegedly yielded evidence that police believe is relevant to their investigations. However, authorities have not disclosed the nature of the evidence, saying inquiries are still ongoing.
Police are now trying to establish how the suspect managed to escape from custody, with internal investigations underway to determine whether there was negligence or assistance from anyone responsible for guarding him.
Under Ugandan law, escaping from lawful custody is a criminal offence and can attract additional charges if a suspect is rearrested and convicted.
If apprehended, Iduuli is also expected to face charges related to alleged same-sex sexual conduct, which remains criminalised under Uganda’s legal framework. Authorities have not indicated when the alleged offences are said to have occurred.
The incident also highlights the serious risks faced by individuals accused of homosexuality in Uganda. Such accusations often trigger public hostility, mob violence, destruction of property and threats to personal safety before allegations are tested in court.
Police intervention in such cases is frequently aimed at preventing mob justice and ensuring that suspects, regardless of the allegations against them, are protected and processed through the legal system.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could lead to Iduuli’s arrest or help establish the circumstances surrounding his escape to report to the nearest police station. Investigations into both the alleged offences and the escape remain ongoing.
