President Yoweri Museveni and General Salim Saleh are expected to grace the 60th anniversary celebrations of Luwero Secondary School, as the institution prepares to mark six decades of academic, spiritual and vocational development.
The school traces its roots to a joint parents’ meeting of Luwero Boys and Luwero Girls schools held on November 23, 1964. The meeting was chaired by retired Parish Priest Reverend Canon Sajjabi, during which parents resolved to establish a senior secondary school founded on the Church of Uganda’s values.
A committee was subsequently elected, leading to the establishment of Luwero Secondary School in 1966 with an initial enrollment of just eight students.
Six decades later, the school has grown into a major institution with a population of about 1,530 students, guided by its founding emphasis on spiritual and academic excellence.
Preparations for the anniversary celebrations are now in high gear, with teachers and students making final arrangements ahead of the commemorative activities on Friday 14th August 2026.
By Wednesday, students were seen conducting rehearsals, while workers undertook the final cleaning of the school premises.
Tents to host the guests were being erected, with other preparations also underway.
According to the school’s headteacher, Ronald Kato, the celebrations will begin with a procession at 7:00am on Friday, followed by a Thanksgiving service at 9:00am presided over by the Bishop of Luwero Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Wilson Kisekka.
Kato said the programme will also feature exhibitions by students, speeches from school administrators and church leaders, among other activities.
He added that the school expects President Museveni to attend as the Chief Guest, alongside General Salim Saleh, the Commander of Operation Wealth Creation.
“We are happy with how far the school has come, both in enrollment and infrastructure development. During the anniversary, we also intend to fundraise for the construction of two-storey building as the school moves to upgrade its infrastructure,” Kato said.
Over the years, Luwero Secondary School has produced prominent religious leaders, academics, national leaders and professionals in various fields.
Among the old boys and girls of Luweero SS include Steven Kyatereka the Under Secretary in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Christopher Makanga Deputy Auditor General, former Nakaseke MP Paulson Luttamaguzi Ssemakula, Mariam Kaberuka Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Kimanya Kabonera Division and William Mawejje the Chief Executive Officer of Brac among others .
Others are Rogers Mulindwa the National Resistance Movement publicist at Party Secretariat, Bernard Okello the Luwero District Principal Human Resource Officer and several district staff .
Beyond conventional academics, the school also equips learners with practical skills through vocational studies, poultry farming and other programmes.
Kato described the institution as a model school that has lived up to the expectations of its founders and said the anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate its achievements while laying the foundation for further growth.
“Luwero Secondary School is now a model school which has lived up to the expectations of its founders, and we are happy to mark its 60th anniversary. In the coming year, we intend to continue excelling in academics and improving our infrastructure, especially as the school continues to attract a high number of students,” he said.
