Renegade Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer Peter Elwelu has been arrested by security forces in Soroti City over alleged involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.
The arrest was announced on Monday evening by Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, who said Elwelu had been apprehended after being on the run.
According to Magezi, security forces had recently recovered 15 guns allegedly in Elwelu’s possession, alongside military fatigues and two pickup trucks.
Elwelu is accused of involvement in activities that authorities say were intended to destabilise the Teso sub-region, although further details about the alleged activities have not yet been made public.
Magezi said Elwelu would be charged and prosecuted in courts of law accordingly.
The circumstances surrounding his arrest, the specific charges he is expected to face and whether other suspects are involved have not yet been disclosed.
The security forces are yet to provide further details about the operation that led to his arrest.
