Police in Kampala city have arrested Richard Kalema over allegations of fleecing Ugandans, through posing as Staff the Staff of Ministry of Works and Transport .
Kalema was arrested from Motor Vehicle Registration office based in Nakawa after promising to process vehicle transfers and number plates for several Ugandans.
Kalema was picked after Jinja Road Police Station in Kampala city and Ministry of Works and Transport launched an covert operation to net suspects behind fraud in motor vehicle transactions at Nakawa.
Waiswa Bageya the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Works and Transport said in the statement that upon arrest , confessed of the crimes before detectives at at Jinja Rd Police Station
“He is believed to be a ring leader in wider racket. Ministry of Works strongly cautions all members of the public seeking services at Our Motor Vehicle Registration Offices in Nakawa to deal with only authorized Ministry staff seated at service desks” Bageya said in a statement
He also asked Ugandans to verify identification of the staff before making transactions and avoid dealing with brokers.
He also cautioned Ugandans against making payments to personal accounts or informal channels.
“The Ministry working with Uganda Police will intensify enforcement operations to dismantle criminal networks targeting citizens seeking government services” Bageya added
Bageya urged the public to remain vigilant and report suscipious individuals to the Police or directly to the Ministry’s Motor Vehicle Registration office on 0200 420000
