The Savannah Regional Police raided the home of Luwero District Chairman Erastus Kibirango and impounded his official .
This is after Kibirango together with his driver John Matovu was summoned and grilled on Tuesday for close to three hours .
Kibirango is being investigated for misuse of his official car LG 00066 -068 when he drove it during NUP Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi campaign rally at Kalungi playground in Nakasongola district on Friday.
Kibirango appeared before the Savannah Regional Police Criminal Investigation Department Boss, Detective Senior Superintendent of Police Frederick Wetaya, to defend himself over misuse of his office government vehicle, LG 00066 -068 contrary to presidential elections act
Kibirango is accused of using the car to transport supporters to the rally and disrupt Policemen who were clearing the road during the Kyagulanyi procession through Gayaza-Zirobwe-Kamira-Kalungi road to the campaign venue.
The District Chairman was also ordered to come with the vehicle under investigation and the driver but he turned up riding on boda boda
Detectives grilled Kibirango on the misuse of the car before ordering him to surrender the vehicle.
Kibirango who first told the detectives that the car was monitoring government projects ,later agreed to take them to his home in Wobulenzi town where it was retrieved and later transferred to Savannah Regional Police headquarters where it was parked.
Police released Kibirango unconditionally and detectives told him that they will invite him any time to help in investigations in the matter.
Before answering the summons,Kibirango addressed the media where he defended driving the car on Kyagulanyi arguing that he is a member of the District Security Committee and was helping the Police to keep law.
” Police must be thanking me because I was in the lead of the Kyagulanyi procession and ensured that the supporters don’t block the road . We registered no accident and am wondering why the police impound my car ?” Kibirango told media
Kibirango warned the Savannah Regional Police commander Micheal Kasigire against meddeling in local politics and selective applications of the laws on the use of government vehicles in campaigns.
” During President Yoweri Museveni rally in Luwero, several politicians and UPDF officers were seen campaigning using government cars . I have not seen my friend Kasigire summon any . He shouldn’t provoke the peaceful people of Luwero ” Kibirango said
On Wednesday, Kibirango was seen walking to work and using boda bodas to monitor government projects
” The police wanted to cripple the work of the Chairman but he is strong . Even if it needs to walk to work ,he will do so ” Isaac Wampamba District Councillor for Butuntumula sub county.
Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the investigation of the chairman.
”The Territorial Police in Savannah Region is actively investigating a case involving the misuse of a government vehicle, registration number LG 0066-068, assigned to the Chairman LC V of Luwero District, Mr. Kibirango Erastus. Photographic evidence has been collected, witness statements have been recorded, and the vehicle in question has been impounded and is currently held at the Luwero Central Police Station yard.
Further investigations are ongoing as the police continue to gather information.” Twiineamazima said in statement released on Tuesday
Meanwhile the Luwero District Chief Administrative Officer Innocent Asaba has given the driver of Kibirango two days to defend himself over the misuse of the car .
” You are warned against misuse of the government car and given two days to defend yourself within two days ” CAO Asaba letter reads .
Matovu filled the defense on Tuesday before he appeared before detectives at Savannah Regional Police where he was strongly warned against misuse of the car.
”Think about your job and family before you misuse that car ” a detective told Matovu .
