Run For The Cathedral: Mukono Diocese Launches Shs5 Billion Fundraising Drive

Mukono Diocese has launched a community fundraising run as part of efforts to raise about Shs5 billion required to complete its new diocesan cathedral.

The run, scheduled for October 3, 2026, is expected to attract more than 20,000 participants and will start at the cathedral premises before runners move through surrounding communities.

Bishop Enos Kagodo said the event is part of a broader fundraising campaign targeting Christians, businesses and other well-wishers to raise the money needed to complete the cathedral.

“We are looking for about Shs5 billion to complete this noble work. This is one of the ways of collecting money,” Bishop Kagodo said.

The diocese has been mobilising contributions through fundraising envelopes, with Christians encouraged to contribute Shs20,000 towards the construction. Participants in the run will also be required to purchase a jersey at Shs20,000, with proceeds contributing to the cathedral project.

Bishop Kagodo said the fundraising campaign is intended to encourage Christians to take ownership of the cathedral, which is expected to serve the diocese for generations.

Once completed, the cathedral is projected to accommodate between 5,000 and 6,000 worshippers, providing the diocese with a larger venue for major church services and other religious gatherings.

The fundraising drive has attracted support from the private sector, including Eurofoam, which has pledged 100 bags of cement and 200 running jerseys for participants who may not be able to afford them.

Claire Kemigisha, Eurofoam Marketing Manager, said the company would continue supporting the project until the cathedral is completed.

She said the company plans to distribute the 200 jerseys within communities to enable people willing to participate in the run but unable to purchase a jersey to take part.

Eurofoam will also provide mattresses as prizes for winners in different race categories.

Centenary Bank, another major promoter of the run, has contributed 142 bags of cement towards the construction of the cathedral.

The bank has pledged continued support for the fundraising campaign while encouraging participants to use digital payment platforms instead of carrying cash during the event.

For Mukono Diocese, the October run is expected to combine fundraising with community mobilisation, giving Christians and other supporters an opportunity to contribute towards a project that has been identified as a priority for the diocese.

The diocese hopes the participation of more than 20,000 people will generate significant contributions towards the Shs5 billion target and bring the cathedral closer to completion.
