The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has called for a fresh audit of the International Specialized Hospital of Uganda project in Lubowa, citing concerns over accountability for the public funds invested in the project.
Ssenyonyi made the call on Monday while addressing journalists at Parliament alongside members of his Shadow Cabinet.
He said the Ministry of Health had given the opposition team permission to visit the project site as part of their oversight activities, but they were surprised to find themselves blocked from accessing the construction site.
According to Ssenyonyi, the last audit of the project by the Auditor General was conducted in 2022, yet government has continued committing substantial resources to the project.
He questioned the accountability of more than Shs600 billion reportedly sunk into the Lubowa hospital project and said the opposition would raise the matter on the floor of Parliament when legislators resume business.
The Nakawa West MP said a fresh audit would help establish the current status of the project and provide clarity on how public funds committed to it have been utilised.
The proposed audit comes amid continued scrutiny of the Lubowa hospital project, particularly over expenditure, progress of construction and accountability for government resources.
Ssenyonyi and the Shadow Cabinet were attempting to conduct an oversight visit to the project when they were denied access to the site.
