One person has been confirmed dead and several students injured after a school bus carrying learners of Mwebaze High School, Kakiri, collided with a train at Namumira–Bukasa Village in Nakisunga Sub-county, Mukono District.
The crash occurred at about 6:45 a.m. on Thursday along the Katosi Road at the Namumira railway crossing. The bus was transporting students to Jinja District for an educational trip when it was involved in the collision with the train.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, a female passenger died at the scene, while several students sustained injuries.
Police officers, together with other emergency responders, evacuated the injured to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.
The scene has since been secured as investigators work to establish the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police said further updates, including the identities of the deceased and the injured, will be released once their next of kin have been notified and more verified information becomes available.
