KAMPALA — Police at Kabalagala Police Station have arrested the girlfriend of Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Matovu was killed on Thursday morning at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala District, in an incident that has shocked many Ugandans.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to his girlfriend’s residence at about 5:30 a.m.
According to Kawala, Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence when they were allegedly confronted by a male suspect who had previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
“It is alleged that Matovu and the lady were leaving the residence before they were confronted by a male suspect who is also alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same lady,” Kawala said in a statement posted on X.
Matovu sustained serious injuries during the confrontation and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have since arrested the woman who was with Matovu at the time of the incident. Kawala said preliminary information suggests that the incident may have followed a physical altercation.
However, she said the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s subsequent death have not yet been fully established.
The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigation.
Kawala said the male suspect has been positively identified and is believed to have fled the scene. Police are actively pursuing him in an effort to arrest him and establish what exactly happened.
“Police detectives are continuing to verify the various accounts surrounding the incident,” Kawala said.
She urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work without interference.
“We assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts of the matter,” Kawala said.
