The Police Force in Luwero District has received 20 motorcycles to strengthen the Sub-County Policing Model, a programme launched by the Inspector General of Police on the directive of President Yoweri Museveni.
The Sub-County Policing Model is intended to enhance police efficiency, reduce crime and violence, and promote community participation in maintaining law and order.
However, the implementation of the model has faced challenges, including inadequate transport, accommodation and manpower, among others.
To address some of these challenges, the Police Force has procured and distributed motorcycles to sub-county police stations across the Savannah and Wamala regions to improve mobility, crime prevention and response to emergencies.
Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, said the region had received 52 brand-new motorcycles specifically allocated to sub-county police stations.
Of these, 20 motorcycles were allocated to Luwero District, 17 to Nakasongola and 15 to Nakaseke.
“This invaluable contribution is a direct fulfillment of the Presidential directive on decentralization, and it significantly enhances our capacity to improve security, accessibility, and service delivery to our communities across the region. We remain deeply grateful and committed to utilizing these resources effectively in the continued pursuit of peace, order, and public safety,” Twiineamazima said.
On Wednesday, Luwero Resident District Commissioner Mariam Nalubega handed over the 20 motorcycles to police stations and cautioned officers against misusing the vehicles, particularly riding them while under the influence of alcohol.
Nalubega urged the officers to use the motorcycles to respond to emergencies and combat crimes reported in the district, including cattle theft, gang-related activities and other forms of theft.
“I also urge you to keep these motorcycles safely because it would be unfortunate to hear that you have lost them to thieves. I remind you not to dare ride them while drunk to avoid accidents and breaking the law,” Nalubega said.
Wamala Region Receives 95 Motorcycles
Meanwhile, the Police Force has deployed 95 brand-new motorcycles to the five districts of the Wamala Region to improve the mobility of police personnel at sub-county stations and enhance crime prevention and rapid response to incidents.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, said 33 motorcycles had been allocated to police stations in Mubende, 19 to Mityana, 15 to Kassanda, 13 to Kiboga and 15 to Kyankwanzi.
Kigozi said the distribution would ensure that every sub-county police station in the region is equipped with at least two motorcycles, with more deliveries expected.
“Police officers are therefore cautioned against careless and reckless use of these motorcycles to enable them to serve the purpose of fighting crime in the respective sub-counties,” Kigozi said.
He also warned officers against misuse, carelessness and reckless riding, saying such conduct would attract disciplinary action.
Kigozi further appealed to members of the public to report any police officer found abusing or misusing the motorcycles so that appropriate disciplinary action can be taken.
