Kiboga -Police have arrested a man suspected of robbing and killing a boda boda rider in Kiboga District after he was involved in a fatal road accident in Kampala.
The suspect has been identified as Everest Tusiime, 24, a resident of Namusera in Wakiso District. He is accused of killing Aaron Sserwadda, 40, a resident of Kijojolo Cell, Bukomero Town Council, Kiboga District.
According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred on July 10 at around 10:45 p.m. Tusiime, who was allegedly armed with a knife, hired Sserwadda from Kijojolo Boda Boda Stage to Kakunyu D Cell in Bukomero Town Council.
Kigozi said that after travelling about one kilometre from the stage, the suspect allegedly attacked the rider in a dark section of a coffee plantation, stabbing him several times in the back and neck before fleeing with his motorcycle, a red Bajaj Boxer bearing registration number UMA 806BN.
Police were alerted and responded to the scene, but the suspect had already escaped with the stolen motorcycle towards Kampala. Police alerted the olice stations along Kiboga – Kampala road to intercept the robber
”The scene was documented, statements were recorded, and the deceased’s body was conveyed to Kiboga Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination,” Kigozi said.
Police efforts paid off when Tusiime was arrested in Kasubi, Kampala, after he was involved in a road accident while allegedly riding the stolen motorcycle. The crash claimed the life of an unidentified passenger who was travelling with him.
”The suspect, who also sustained injuries in the accident, was treated at Mulago Hospital before being handed over to Kiboga Police together with the recovered stolen motorcycle,” Kigozi added.
Kigozi assured residents of Bukomero Town Council and the boda boda fraternity that the suspect is now in police custody and will face prosecution on charges of aggravated robbery.
”I wish to inform our people in Bukomero Town Council that the suspected killer of Aaron Sserwadda is in the hands of Kiboga Police. We appeal to the boda boda rider community to remain calm as the suspect will be prosecuted in the courts of law,” Kigozi said.
Police have also advised boda boda riders to exercise extra caution when transporting passengers at night, particularly those they do not know.
