The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Nakaseke South Member of Parliament seat, Charles Nsereko Basajjassubi, is set for nomination after securing a landslide victory in the party primaries.
Nsereko is scheduled to be nominated on Wednesday, October 22, to contest for the parliamentary seat currently occupied by Paulson Luttamaguzi Ssemakula, who recently crossed from the Democratic Party (DP) to the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Luttamaguzi won the 2021 general elections with 26,173 votes, defeating Nsereko, who polled 9,886 votes. However, in the 2025 NRM primaries, Nsereko made significant inroads, garnering 26,156 votes to defeat Arthur Nkalubo with 1,247 votes and Idi Kigozi, who managed 527 votes.
Ahead of his nomination, Nsereko vowed to “liberate” the constituency under his campaign slogan “Enfuufu Efumuuke, Okukola Si Bigambo” (The dust should rise, work not words). He will be nominated at 2 p.m. and later address a nomination rally at Kapeeka Playground.
“We have lost time and services because residents elected an MP who spends his time abusing President Museveni on radio instead of lobbying for the area. Voters need to be cautious this time and avoid being swayed by the so-called wave. Let’s vote wisely,” Nsereko said.
Nsereko added that although he is not yet an MP, he has contributed to the area’s development in the past four years through youth skilling programs, construction of schools, health centres, and churches, among other initiatives.
“We are going into this election to show what we have achieved and present a mega plan for the area. We shall also explain the NRM gains that must be protected by voting for President Yoweri Museveni,” he added.
Rosemary Namayanja, the NRM Deputy Secretary General, backed Nsereko, saying the current MP has wasted his term attacking the President instead of addressing the constituency’s challenges.
“Ministers and the President are the ones with the budgets to solve local problems. But the area MP spends all his time abusing them. How will local issues be addressed that way?” Namayanja questioned.
She noted that Nakaseke South and other constituencies in Buganda will be “liberated” from opposition MPs in the upcoming elections.
“These MPs appear on TV and radio talk shows, but their talk ends there. Real projects are lobbied through the NRM caucus and the President. Voting for such politicians is detrimental to your local interests,” she added.
In response, Luttamaguzi vowed to retain the seat, arguing that the NRM government has failed to deliver services to the people.
“The NRM government has failed to deliver services to our area. Many residents are suffering due to land grabbing, and it’s the opposition that is standing up for them,” Luttamaguzi said during a NUP presidential rally in Nakaseke.
Luttamaguzi has previously clashed with several leaders, including Democratic Front President Mathias Mpuuga, following their fallout with Robert Kyagulanyi. Mpuuga, however, chose not to respond, describing Luttamaguzi as “an incompetent MP who doesn’t deserve my time.”
