66 Arrested in Luwero Night Operation Targeting Suspected Criminal Gangs
Police in Luwero District have arrested 66 people during a joint security operation targeting suspected criminal gangs.
The operation was conducted in Kalibongo, Vumba and Kibanyi villages in Busika Town Council, following reports of increasing criminal activity in the areas.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the operation followed intelligence gathering and collaboration between security agencies and members of the community.
According to Twiineamazima, police received credible information indicating that suspected criminals had been regularly gathering in the three areas to allegedly plan and execute criminal activities before spreading to other parts of the district.
He said the suspected activities included the sale of marijuana and opium, burglaries and theft.
The joint operation, led by the Police and involving the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and community members, resulted in the arrest of 66 suspects.
Of those arrested, 56 are male while 10 are female.
Twiineamazima said joint screening of the suspects is ongoing to establish those directly linked to the reported criminal activities.
Suspects found to have cases to answer will be charged and presented before court for prosecution.
Police have also pledged to extend similar operations across Luwero District as part of wider efforts to combat crime, particularly ahead of the upcoming festive season, when security agencies typically intensify crime-prevention measures.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over reported increases in criminal activity in several town councils across Luwero District, placing pressure on security agencies to strengthen their response.
Authorities are expected to continue intelligence-led operations and community engagement in an effort to identify suspected offenders and improve public safety across the district.
