Police have arrested 20 suspects over an attack on Kibuku County Member of Parliament Herbert Kinobere and other mourners during the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu .
The incident occurred on October 25, 2026 at Kungu-Lutale, along Nakawuka Road., when mourners were reportedly attacked over their political affiliations.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru on Monday that the suspects allegedly assaulted Kinobere and other mourners, pelted people with stones and deflated tyres of the legislator’s vehicle.
Rusoke said police intervened to restore order and protect mourners who had fled the violence.
Twenty suspects were arrested and remain in police custody as investigations continue.
He condemned the attack, saying political differences should not prevent people from attending burial ceremonies and paying their last respects.
Rusoke noted that funerals bring together relatives, friends, colleagues and political associates, warning that no one should be denied the opportunity to mourn because of their political affiliation.
He also cautioned that anyone involved in violence, intimidation or destruction of property would be held accountable, regardless of their political beliefs.
“The law isolates you as an individual,” Rusoke said, warning that political affiliation would not protect anyone from prosecution for unlawful acts.
Police urged the public to exercise restraint and respect differing political views, particularly during public gatherings, as investigations into the incident continue
