The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has called on women across Uganda to actively participate in the Village Women Council elections scheduled for July 23, 2026, describing the exercise as a crucial step in strengthening grassroots leadership and enhancing women’s participation in decision-making.
The elections form part of the NRM Electoral Commission’s roadmap for village structures announced by the Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, during a recent press briefing.
According to the roadmap, the party commenced its village electoral activities on July 10, 2026, with village elective barazas held in all 72,000 villages across the country. The exercise verified NRM members, confirmed flag bearers for Local Council I Chairperson and Women Council positions, and filled vacant positions within the party’s village structures.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong has urged all party members, especially women, to embrace the electoral process, emphasizing that strong grassroots leadership is the foundation of the party’s continued growth and unity. He noted that the village elections are aimed at strengthening internal democracy, identifying capable leaders, and preparing the party for the 2026 General Elections.
Todwong also appealed to members to maintain peace, unity, and discipline throughout the electoral process, urging them to avoid actions that could undermine the credibility of the elections. He encouraged women to contest for leadership positions and actively participate in electing leaders who will champion their interests at the village level.
The Village Women Council elections, scheduled for July 23, 2026, will provide eligible women with an opportunity to elect their village representatives, who will play a vital role in mobilizing communities, promoting women’s empowerment, and representing women’s interests within the NRM structures.
