Namayanja Urges Independent NRM-Leaning Candidates to Step Down for Party Flagbearers

Masaka -‎The Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt. Hon. Rose Namayanja Nsereko, has appealed to NRM-leaning independent candidates contesting for LC1 Chairperson and Women Council positions to withdraw from the races and support the party’s official flagbearers.

‎

‎On Tuesday, Namayanja attended NRM sub-county barazas in Mugoye Sub-county, Kalangala District, and Bukakata Sub-county, Masaka District, as part of the party’s ongoing mobilisation campaign.

‎

‎During the meetings, NRM sub-county chairpersons informed her that a number of party supporters had been nominated as independent candidates to contest for LC1 chairperson positions despite the party having official flagbearers.

‎

‎Namayanja criticized the move, saying it undermines party unity, and urged the independent candidates to formally withdraw their nominations with the Electoral Commission.

‎

‎”The NRM conducted primary elections in 2025, during which members elected the party’s flagbearers. In July, we also filled the remaining vacant positions to ensure the party has flagbearers in all the country’s 72,000 villages. There was therefore no justification for NRM supporters to contest as independents in the upcoming elections because the party is fully represented,” Namayanja said.

‎

‎She warned that having multiple NRM-leaning candidates competing for the same seat could split the party’s vote and hand victory to opponents.

‎

‎It is not too late for NRM-leaning independent candidates to withdraw from the race and instead campaign for the party flagbearers,” she added.

‎

‎Namayanja also urged party leaders and supporters to reconcile and work together to secure victory for the NRM in the forthcoming local council elections.

‎

‎”I am happy to learn that we already have a number of candidates who have been elected unopposed. However, we must remain united and work together to win all the available seats,” she said.

‎

‎She further called on residents of Kalangala and Masaka districts to vote for NRM flagbearers if they want the Parish Development Model (PDM) to achieve its intended objectives under President Yoweri Museveni’s vision.

‎

‎”You are aware that both LC1 and LC2 chairpersons play a crucial role in the implementation of the Parish Development Model. If you elect people who have been campaigning against the programme, they may sabotage its implementation or fail to serve your interests,” Namayanja said.

‎

‎Namayanja is expected to continue her mobilisation tour today with village barazas and a radio talk show as she intensifies support for the NRM across the Greater Masaka region.
