‎The Electoral Commission conducted Parish Women Council elections across the country on Friday.

‎

‎In Luwero, however, the majority of seats were won unopposed by NRM candidates, while a smaller number went to independent candidates. The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) secured only a handful of seats despite maintaining significant support for its party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, as well as the area Member of Parliament and other local leaders.

‎

‎According to results released by Luwero District Returning Officer Moses Rwanks Kiconco, NRM candidates won 471 seats, representing 93.2 percent of the total. Independent candidates followed with 28 seats (5.54 percent), while NUP candidates secured six seats (1.19 percent).

‎

‎Kiconco said the majority of candidates went through unopposed, with competitive elections held in only four of the 101 parishes in the district.

‎

‎Luwero District has 505 elective Parish Women Council seats, with each parish electing five leaders: the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary General and Publicity Secretary.

‎

‎Following the conclusion of the Parish Women Council elections, candidates are now preparing for the Sub-County Women Council elections scheduled for August 18.

‎

‎Among the prominent candidates expected to attract attention in the upcoming women’s council elections are former Members of Parliament and parliamentary contestants, including former Luwero District Woman MP Lilian Nakatte, former Youth MP Agnes Kirabo, and former Woman MP contestants Jackline Ssuubi Nakawuka and Faridah Nakalawa.

‎

‎The candidates are seeking positions at the district and national women’s council levels.

‎

‎Speaking at the NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting at Speke Resort Munyonyo, NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko said the party had also won 91.6 percent of village women council seats.

‎

‎“This reaffirms the confidence and trust that Ugandans continue to place in the NRM government,” Namayanja said.

‎

‎However, opposition politicians have continued to dismiss the women’s council elections, arguing that the process was flawed and did not provide an accurate reflection of popular political support
